Well, they may not use smoke, but they do use mirrors. By inserting a 90-degree mirror in the center of the camera, the lens arrays that are required to focus the incoming light onto the imagers can be positioned on the Z axis instead of the X or Y axis. This means the camera may be taller but thinner than conventional 360-degree cameras (2.1cm vs. a typical 3.15cm). Thin is important because the thinner the camera, the smaller the gap between the front and rear images and thus less distortion on combining the images.
